  • VOTE DIVA!

As you've probably read on my blog before, our very own Greenleaf national account manager Jane Bell (pictured on the left in our picture) below, DaleDiva Jane Bell (left)sings in a choir called DaleDivas.  Well, news just hot of the press is that the group has made it through to the televised rounds of Channel Five’s new all-singing all dancing TV show ‘Don’t Stop Believing’.

Jane is the president as well as singing member of Derbyshire-based women’s harmony chorus DaleDiva and reaching the televised rounds meant beating 3,000 other groups from across the country.

DaleDiva, which has 57 members from all over the Derbyshire Dales, has been busy filming and rehearsing over the last few weeks and will appear live on ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ hosted by Baby Spice Emma Bunton on Sunday 1 August on Channel Five at 7pm.

And if the Divas impress the judges – West End star Tamzin Outhwaite, American pop goddess Anastacia, Duncan James from chart-topping band Blue and High School Musical choreographer Chucky Klapow – or win the public vote (that’s where everyone watching at home comes in!) – they’ll have a chance to go through to the live final at the end of the series.

If you’d like to support Jane and the Divas as they represent Derbyshire you can vote for them when the show is on. Check out DaleDiva at www.dalediva.co.uk or find DaleDiva on Facebook.  To find out more about the show visit www.five.tv/dontstop

    Good luck Jane!

  • Save as you water

Up until now, we've had quite a dry summer, which has prompted me to remind you about how Automatic watering systemwe can help you take the hassle out of watering those thirsty hanging baskets.

We install automatic irrigation systems to water any basket we hire out, which includes drip irrigation and micro sprinklers. This is a great way to reduce your water bills and automatically water your baskets and planters at the best time for the plants i.e. early in the morning because less water is lost to evaporation when the temperature is cooler.

Did you know for example that watering your baskets in the evening is bad for them?  Our plant expert and nursery manager, Mark Iles, tells us this is because watering in the evenings can lead to plant disease problems as the water sits on the plants all night.

The other beauty of an automatic irrigation system is that it can help conserve your water, the micro sprinklers and drip irrigation mean less water is wasted but at the same time it ensures your displays are adequately watered.

All our irrigation systems are of a superior quality and ensure huge savings on water bills if installed and managed correctly. The irrigation controller can be adjusted to take in to account weather and seasonal changes at each service visit.

And finally, our automatic watering systems are also eco friendly in that they are powered by low voltage electronic timers utilising the latest technology and are durable for the UK climate.  So what other reasons do you need to order your system today and take the hassle out of watering your baskets?

  • Greenleaf digging for charity

Last week, on the hottestbefore and after border day of the year, some very kind volunteers from Greenleaf and our sister company PHS Datashred, joined forces to help out on a Business in the Community project.

Thames Reach Centre in Southwark is a drugs rehabilitation centre which was badly in need of help with their not very user-friendly garden.  Overgrown and with no proper seating facilities for their staff and clients, the Centre wanted to create a garden everyone could enjoy, to relax, socialise in and par-take of the occasional BBQ.

So ten members of PHS staff, ably equipped with Greenleaf spades and trowels arrived at the centre early in the morning for whatThe Team promised to be a day of hard work, hot sun and great fun.

Their first job was to tidy up the garden generally, then beds and borders were created or spruced up with new plants and a top covering of bark applied. Meanwhile the benches were put together and placed around the garden. Greenleaf supplied the plants, bark and tools while Datashred kindly donated the benches.

It took all day to accomplish these tasks which were back-breaking enough without the added problem of having to take a break in the shade every half hour as the temperatures hit 30 degrees centigrade!

Here's a team photo of the gang who kindly donated their time, you may recognise some of the ex-Greenleaf staff who now work for Datashred, including Karen James (left), Helen Pattenden (third from the right) and Caroline Williams (second from right).  The others are Claire (Datashred), Daniel (Datashred), Elaine (Greenleaf), Phil (Greenleaf), Les (Greenleaf), Harvey (Greenleaf) and Anthony (Datashred).

  • Fit for a Queen...continued

You may remember me mentioning in an earlier blog, that Greenleaf had won the contract to supply all bedding and flowering plants in the borough of Epsom and Ewell. We really felt the pressure with this contract, as we had to make sure that all the flower beds were planted in time for the Queens visit to the borough. True to form, we rose to the challenge and all the beds were blooming for her majesty to admire. Take a look for yourselves…

  • Christmas in Summer

Yesterday we launched Greenleaf's new Christmas Tree range to our sales staff at a fantastic venue, aStudley Castlend true to form, it was probably the hottest day of the year yet again.  It seems strange talking about Christmas whilst the sun is shining gloriously but no doubt it'll just be around the corner!

The venue was Studley Castle in Warwickshire which provided a beautiful back drop to display our new Christmas trees to the sales team. This year we've got four new trees for our customers to choose from as well as some lovely new accessory ideas.  We'll be putting these on our website shortly, together with a copy of this year's new Christmas catalogue, so make sure you come back soon for a look.

As well as showcasing the new Christmas trees, we also launched our new marketing campaigns and product ideas to the team, which I'm glad to say went down really well.

So, thanks to Vicki Wilson, our National Sales Manager for finding such a great venue and treating us to such a good day.

  • In bloom in Loughborough

Our Sheffield branch received a bit of publicity for their hanging baskets in the Loughborough  Echo this week. Mick Beckett gets close to his hanging baskets

The newspaper was promoting the town's efforts with the East Midlands In Bloom awards and took a picture of our very own installs supervisor Mick Beckett.

Our work for the the town started earlier in the year when all the baskets were grown at our Four Oaks nurseries in Cheshire.

Then the fun job began of installing 400 baskets, which we delivered at 6am over three mornings, corordinated by Ian Petherick and Mick Beckett. We also installed over 100 new wrought iron brackets to lampposts throughout the town as well as seven Garsy tower planters planted with Bizzie Lizzies in a funky spiral pattern.

The baskets will be hand watered on a rota system six days a week by Phil Corrick.  Needless to say all the plants look really stunning.

Bob Capel our regional manager is particularly proud of this project - he has to because his mother lives near Loughborough and gives him regular updates on the progress of the displays!

  • Fit for a Queen

We recently won the contract to supply all bedding and flowering plants in the borough of Epsom and Epsom and Ewell plantingEwell, which is fantastic news.

I'll be bringing you more photographs of this shortly but I just wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone involved in this project, particularly Mark Illes, our nursery manager at Waterside in Staines for growing all the plants from scratch.

With the Queen visiting the Epsom Derby recently, the pressure was really on to make sure that the walkways and areas she would be visiting were finished in time, so thanks to everyone for their hard work in achieving this.

I'll post some more photos by the end of the week so keep an eye out.

  • Summer replant off to a good start

3 planters outside an office in MayfairThis time of year is always a busy period for our Greenleaf technicians - it's summer replant time !

But the time spent planting up pots, baskets and flowers beds is all worth while, particularly when we see the end result looking fantastic at our customers premises.

Take a look at a replant that took place in Mayfair, London last week.

Our Gunnersbury based technician, Garry Burrows, planted up boxes of Buxus hedge and cones with Bacopa Mega White, Verbena Sisinghurst and purple Surfinias. Although still in the early stages of blooming, these boxes look great. The customer was so please with them, he called us up to thank us for making the planters look so good, and brightening up the front of his building.

  • Bespoke pots come out of the woodwork...

Chris Balloqui and a recycled wooden potDid you know that our Gunnersbury branch has its own little workshop? Indeed, Chris Balloqui our resident wood crafts man, works solidly in our workshop, producing bespoke wooden timber boxes in all sorts of sizes and finishes. Chris is able to supply boxes and pots for every depot, should they require something special for a customer. Our picture shows a large solid wooden pot that was returned from a client, recently. Chris had spent a few hours stripping and re-coating the pot, bringing it back into tip top condition for re-sale. It's great that we're able to recycle our wooden products, and to such a high spec too...

  • Premier Hanging Basket Service

A few weeks ago I told you about some new products and services we would be launching in the near future.  Premier Hanging Basket RangeWell I am pleased to tell you about one of them, our Premier Hanging Basket Service.

As you probably already know we produce some of the best hanging baskets in the industry, in terms of luscious, vibrant, long-flowering baskets. This is due to a combination of growing our own plants at one of our three nurseries, and employing horticulturally trained staff to maintain them too.

Anyway, our hanging baskets just got even better with the introduction of our Premier Range.  These baskets contain even more long-flowering luscious flowers that you wouldn't normally expect to find in the standard basket.  Plants such as Coleus Saturn, Dichondra Emerald Falls, Begonia  Mill Kiss Devotion and Petunia Thumbelia Cherry Ripple.

And as an added benefit, at Christmas we'll swop the Premier basket for an outdoor lit buxus ball, to make your premises look even more festive.

If you would like to find out more about this new range, give our team a call on 01269 590 490.

  • Is it that time of the year already?

Yes, here we go again.  The sun is shinning and we're all enjoying the warmer weather so guess what - yes Living Christmas tree range?it's time for our Christmas photography again.

I always find it amazing that every year when we do our Christmas photography, we always seem to pick the warmest day of the year to do it on!  This year was no exception.

Mark Durose together with our designers Elsie and Julie spent the day last week in our photographic studio sorting out this years new Christmas tree photography.  As you know, we lead the way in Christmas tree hire so we have to invest in new ideas every year and stay ahead of the competition as usual.

We've got several new Christmas tree designs up our sleeves again plus a lot of other Christmas ideas for our customers.  The big launch of the brochure should be taking place at the end of June, so watch this space.

And just in case you're wondering, we haven't added Living Trees to our range this year.  It was just Mark having a funny moment!  Well it was a hot day in the studio.

  • National Sales Manager

I'd like to introduce you to our new National Sales Manager for Greenleaf, Vicki Wilson.

Greenleaf's new National Sales Manager, Vicki Wilson

Now Vicki is certainly no stranger to PHS, having joined the Group over 20 years ago and working her way up through the ranks during that time.

Her last role at PHS was regional sales manager for Washrooms, looking after a large territory covering the South and South East.  She was also actively involved with acquisitions too, so a real all-rounder really.

Vicki is well known through the Group for her drive, sheer enthusiasm and energy so we're all delighted to have her join us in this newly created role.

I caught up with Vicki at Gunnersbury branch recently and she told me she's really looking forward to getting her teeth into the role, getting out and about with our sales team as well as familiarising herself with our products.

    Welcome on board Vicki.

  • DaleDivas Deliver Again

Cast your minds back to my blog last August (or just click on the August link opposite) and you'll remember Jane Bell Pictured leftI mentioned about our own diva, National Account Manager Jane Bell and her involvement in the DaleDivas Choir.

They're a 4 part Accapella Chorus (that's a ladies barbershop to you and I).  The chorus has been going for 2 years and Jane is president, which is why she always collects the medals!

Well, a bit more good news about them and another gong.  They recently won the Choir of the Day certificate as part of the Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition. Quite an achievement considering the  competition.  They now have to wait until August or so to find out if they've made National finals in Birmingham.  (Jane is the lady on the left in the picture).  Good luck girls.

And another thing.  DaleDiva are about to have their second annual concert at  County Hall in Matlock  Derbyshire for anyone who wants to hear them sing, tickets are £10.00 each with a full evenings entertainment. www.dalediva.co.uk

Who knows what they may win next.

  • On the run

We like to do our bit for charity at PHS so I was impressed to hear about a colleague of mine putting Anthony is on the run for charityon his running shoes in aid of a good cause.

Anthony Pearlgood, Commercial Director of our Datashred Division recently completed the 3 mile Sport Relief run and apparently came first in his category with a time of 26 minutes!!

Anthony tells me that the "category" was extremely narrow - males aged 43 who work for PHS and live in Bromley!!  Anyway, a victory is a victory - even if it is just in the eyes of the beholder!!

Well done Anthony for raising over £500 for Sport Relief.

I hear he’s now training for the Great North 10K in Sunderland in July along with a team of 10 others from PHS, one of whom is our very own former MD Steph Hutchings.

All I can say is rather you than me guys, but good luck anyway!

  • Better than Caffeine!

I just had to tell you about a new air freshener fragrance our PHS Washrooms division have just launched.  New fragrance to motivate your staff

Called Fresh 'N' Smart, it's designed especially to invigorate and motivate your staff and customers.  It's quite literally a breath of fresh air!

I have to say I'm really excited about this because of the opportunities it has for Greenleaf  within our plants and displays.

We've developed a small battery operated gadget which fits discreetly on top of the soil within our pots and blends in well with the plant itself.

At regular intervals, a small blast of this Fresh 'N' Smart fragrance is emitted into the air.  From the tests our Washrooms division have conducted already, the fragrance really does do the trick.  Better than a blast of caffeine I'd say!  It's completely environmentally friendly too.

We'll be launching this new fragrance within our plant pots within the next few weeks.  If you are interested in having a trial within your company, Click Here for more information

  • New Financial year off to a good start

To kick-start our new financial year yesterday (29th March), we held a sales conference for all Greenleaf sales staff at our Tamworth Greenleaf sale conferencebranch in the Midlands.  Despite the weather, it was a really good turnout and a great opportunity for everyone to meet our new MD, Stuart Price.

The focus of the day was about delivering excellent service and new product ideas for our customers.  Cheesy as it sounds, we realise that to remain the leading interior and exterior landscaping specialist, we have to keep coming up with innovative ideas to keep our product offering above that of our competitors.

We think our regular Product Review quarterly meetings are starting to pay off and over the next few days I'll be talking about these ideas in more detail.

It was great to see Chris Jeffries again after his heart attack last year.  He was looking well and judging by his comments throughout the day, is certainly back on form again!  Nice to have you back Chris!

Thanks also to Karen and the team from Clarke and Spears who turned up with a lorry-load of new pots and ideas to show us, which went down well, as always.

And I'm glad to say I didn't disappoint on the bad tie front again, as you can see from the pictures opposite!

  • Get ready for a warm summer (again!)

It's official, according to the website www.positiveweathersolutions.co.uk, we're in for a lovely Drought resistant basketswarm summer.  These are the same people who got it right last year by predicting a wash-out summer followed by a particularly cold winter so they're more credible than the Met Office in my eyes.

If that's the case, this leads me onto a bit of shameless advertising.  Hanging baskets become a bit of a nightmare to look after during spells of drought or just even very warm summers so I'd like to remind everyone about our drought resistance hanging basket and flower range.

One of the first things to remember is to choose plants that need less watering.  Many Mediterranean and tropical plants often need less water than traditional flowers and can look as effective in containers and planters.  But if your heart is still set on flowers, why not try something such as the Decora, a colourful, trailing geranium full of character.

Hanging baskets planted with Decora require significantly less watering than regular hanging baskets, without losing their visual appeal.

We can also plant Decora in troughs, hay mangers and other planters - just tell us what you want and we'll make sure your summer flower collection looks spectacular.

But get your orders in early.  If Positive Weather Solutions are indeed correct, we expect our drought resistent baskets to sell like hot cakes in a few months!
