PHS Greenleaf Stands Up to the Challenge
PHS Greenleaf works with the World Flower Council to supply and install an array of interior planting for the Malaysian Tourism Board at the World Travel Market Exhibition with just 10 days’ notice.
PHS Greenleaf quite literally made a stand at the recent World Travel Market Exhibition. Working closely with the World Flower Council, the UK’s leading interior landscaping expert pulled out all the stops to present a fabulous display of plants and trees to help promote Malaysia as a top tourist destination. With just ten days’ notice, the World Flower Council knew that there was one supplier it could rely on for the provision of indigenous plants that would help attract visitors to the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism stand at the international exhibition. PHS Greenleaf went to extraordinary lengths to design, supply and install foliage and floral displays at the World Travel Market Exhibition recently held at Excel, London. The process, which would usually require weeks of preparation, was completed in a fraction of the time during what is traditionally one of PHS Greenleaf’s busiest periods. Despite the 6-hour time difference, the experienced PHS Greenleaf team was able to plan a total of 17m2 of planting and 53 pedestal stands according to seasonality and availability, after consultation with Malaysian representatives and the World Flower Council. Three metre tall Phoenix palm trees and plant species such as Ferns, Spathiphyllum, Aglaonema, Ficus and Banana were carefully chosen to provide green leafy areas for relaxation while colourful sections using Strelitzia, Croton ‘Petra’ and ‘Goldfinger’, Guzmania ‘Torch’ and Anthurium (pink and red) were used to provide impact and attract attention. Visitors to the stand, including the Malaysian Minister of Tourism, the Malaysian Ambassador and other dignitaries were treated to the array of different plants which reflected the diversity of Malaysian culture. Designing the layout was one thing, executing the plan was quite another. Several obstacles were overcome, not least the task of rescheduling staff to accommodate the project in PHS Greenleaf’s hectic winter replanting program at customer sites throughout the UK. Access to the stand at Excel was restricted, which meant that all the plants, trees and nearly 4 tons of Leca, gravel and pebbles had to be delivered to the stand by hand! With time pressures mounting, PHS Greenleaf’s technicians worked as the stand was being constructed and painted, using creative methods to cope with minimal planting depths, adapting the design and modifying planting boxes which differed from the original specifications. After 15 hours of installing some 600 plants, the team emerged tired but confident that they had created a display to the high standard expected from PHS Greenleaf. Long-standing relationships with trusted suppliers, such as Koberg, meant that the sourcing of any plants not available from PHS Greenleaf’s own nurseries could be achieved with confidence. The Phoenix palms were shipped directly from Malaysia by the World Flower Council who expressed their pleasure with the end result. Paul Grange, Account Manager for PHS Greenleaf was happy to rise to the challenge, confident of success despite the short timescale. “It is very easy to take for granted the level of commitment and teamwork that exists within the PHS Greenleaf team,” says Paul, “but when we are presented with what seems like an impossible task, it highlights what can only be described as true talent and dedication. “The difficult we can do straight away, the impossible sometimes takes us a few days.”
