Iconic Christmas displays from around the world

There are plenty of things we love about the festive season; mince pies, advent calendars, cheesy feel-good films, Christmas carols… and of course, the abundance of pretty Christmas displays to be visited!

With twinkling lights and colourful decorations being such a big part of the holidays, our team get hard at work each year to help our clients spread the festive joy in their premises. This involves decorating our real and artificial Christmas in various colour schemes, as well as installing bespoke Christmas light displays in a range of impressive designs.

To really make an impact, we draw inspiration from many spectacular Christmas displays from around the world. This ranges from Tokyo’s famous Midtown Christmas display, and the unmissable giant tree at Rockefeller Centre in New York City, to a display that can be found a little closer to home in London’s Covent Garden. Each of these displays continue to leave a lasting impression year after year, and have come to be a symbol of the much-loved festive season for their own reasons.

With that in mind, here are some of our favourite iconic Christmas displays from around the world…

Rockefeller Centre - most iconic Christmas displaysRockefeller Centre, New York City

The festive display at the Rockefeller Centre is perhaps the most famous in the world, and this is thanks to its giant Christmas tree, whose lighting ceremony is broadcast live to hundreds of millions of people every year. Typically a Norwegian Spruce that’s between 21 and 30 metres tall, the tradition of placing the tree in Rockefeller Centre is one that has stood the test of time, and it actually dates back to 1933.

This year’s Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree is said to be around 80 years old, is 75 feet (22.8 metres) tall, and weighs in at an impressive 12-tonnes. Topped with a 9.5 foot Swarovski star, and wrapped in 50,000 bright LED lights, this is a beautiful eye-catching display that’s hard to miss!

Covent Garden, LondonCovent Garden - most iconic Christmas displays

London is known for its beautiful Christmas lighting displays in a number of locations, including Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Carnaby Street, amongst others. However, Covent Garden’s festive displays are always particularly impressive, especially as they’re set against the classic backdrop of the piazza’s 19th century-style cobbled streets and market buildings.

For 2017, Covent Garden has favoured a romantic mistletoe theme for their Christmas display. As well as the famous large Christmas tree that takes pride of place in the piazza every year, this year’s display includes 40 impressive mistletoe chandeliers (which range between being 2.5 and 3.5 metres in size), and these have over 320 metres of delicate garlands running between them!

Monte Carlo Casino Square - most iconic Christmas displaysMonte Carlo Casino Square, Monaco

With its famous casino (the “Casino de Monte-Carlo”) and array of hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs, Monte Carlo’s Casino Square is popular with tourists, and is a hive of colour and activity all year round. However, from the first week of December every year, the square also transforms itself into a beautiful winter wonderland, complete with festive decorations and even gently playing Christmas music!

Visit Monte Carlo’s Casino Square to delight at this year’s display, which features a traditionally festive colour scheme of red, white, and gold. Main features also include a forest of beautiful white Christmas trees, a magical Christmas village (which has a big wheel, skating rink, and chalets selling products) as well as a cloak of bright twinkling lights that perfectly cover the square.

Midtown Christmas, TokyoMidtown Christmas - most iconic Christmas displays

Tokyo Midtown is known for its annual Christmas display, which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017. Popular with both locals and tourists alike (who sometimes bring a bottle of champagne with them when they visit the display), the standout of the event each year is the “Starlight Garden”, which sees the 2,000m² Midtown Garden area become covered with over 280,000 blue LED lights.

As well as creating a wonderfully wintery atmosphere with the bright blue Starlight Garden, the Tokyo Midtown Christmas display will also include a Vision Dome light show, which will project artificial stars and moons into the dark night sky for a truly stunning contrast!
