Mastering Moss Art

The health, wellbeing, creativity and productivity benefits to employees of bringing a splash of nature to your work environment are well documented, and a great way to transform your premises into a modern, visually stunning and memorable space. From hospitals and surgeries to restaurants and hotels, educational facilities to offices, retailers and beyond – adding foliage and other natural elements can positively transform the look and feel of many indoor and outdoor workplaces.

Top of the pops when it comes to introducing greenery into your internal space that’s beneficial, eye-catching, and easy to install and maintain has to be a moss wall or moss art. Here we give you the lowdown on the benefits of moss, how moss art is made, and how our horticultural experts at phs Greenleaf can help you achieve stunning statement décor for your workspace.

The magic of moss

With its vibrant yet soothing appearance, moss has become a staple component of modern biophilic design – the practice of bringing natural elements into the design of the built environment. Several studies on biophilia have found that increased greenery such as indoor plants and moss can have a positive effect on employees’ workplace satisfaction by creating a calming environment, therefore reducing tension an anxiety. This is because people have an inherent affinity with nature, and bringing natural elements into the workspace fulfils that need for connection.

Other reported benefits of introducing greenery to workplaces and commercial environments include:

What’s more, moss walls are a highly effective natural noise absorber that facilitate improved acoustics and thus increased concentration levels for occupants. In fact, research has found that moss walls can reduce ambient noises in offices by up to 5 decibels, making them ideal calming solutions for busy open-plan interiors, such as offices, schools, restaurants, hotel lobbies, and retail environments. This sound absorbency can be easily maximised. Moss walls supplied by phs Greenleaf are versatile enough that they can cover an entire wall or be placed in frames that co-ordinate with rest of the wall’s décor, for example in a hotel or restaurant.

How moss walls are made

Our moss walls are made of top-quality, completely non-toxic preserved moss. Preserved moss is natural moss that is no longer alive and has been carefully preserved to retain its colour, texture, and soft, plush quality for decorative purposes through an eco-friendly process. Preservation keeps the moss durable, colourful, soft, and maintenance-free.

Our moss walls are available with two kinds of preserved moss as well as other mosses and natural materials. Reindeer moss – composed of many light and dainty branches – is our most popular type of moss, due to its flexibility and availability in a variety of colours including many shades of green. The variety of colour options means that the moss can be matched to your room’s colour scheme or your company logo. Bun moss – also known as cushion moss – is also popular because of its unique raised, rounded texture and natural look. These mosses can be used on their own, as a mixed moss wall or as mixed moss with other natural products such as bark, seed heads and coir to add texture and variety to Art panels.

Easy to maintain in any indoor environment

Once installed, our moss walls are very low maintenance – unlike traditional indoor plants – as they don’t require any sunlight, soil, or watering. This makes them the perfect sustainable, decorative greenery for any indoor environment, particularly if your business lacks the staff, budgetary resources, or environmental conditions to care for real plants.

Space saving game-changer

Our range of moss walls are fully customisable and available to fit any shape and size of wall or frame. They are made from sectioned panels set on firm but slim backing board – meaning the depth of the final installation is generally quite shallow. Unlike live planting which will take up space as they protrude from your wall, moss walls and panels only use a fraction of room space, making them the ideal product to embrace the natural, biophilic look and give your premises an attractive and beneficial boost without sacrificing space.  Due to the flexible nature of the product, we can also create dynamic lettering and logos of all shapes and sizes to recreate your company branding or produce unique motifs.

What about outdoor spaces?

Because of its preserved state, moss makes an ideal and low-maintenance material to artfully transform your indoor space. However, you may be considering whether to similarly transform your outdoor façade or communal area with moss art. Perhaps you are seeking to boost your curb appeal with potential clients, or enhance staff wellbeing before they even cross the threshold of your premises? Whilst moss is a versatile substance, it does have certain limitations that need to be considered. For example, moss should not be placed in direct sunlight as it will scorch, or anywhere it can wet as it will absorb moisture, expand and become spoiled. For these reasons, it may be best to consider other options for outdoors.

If you are looking to improve the outside appearance of your premises, it’s highly worth considering outdoor living walls from phs Greenleaf. These can be used on main building exteriors, on boundary or garden walls, and even as photo backgrounds in outdoor hospitality environments. Automatic watering systems and a comprehensive maintenance service are also available.
