Give Your Exterior A Boost With Winter Hanging Baskets

Are you wondering what to do with the outside of your premises during winter?

Winter hanging baskets are the perfect choice for businesses looking to make a positive first impression during the colder months.
Most people associate flowers, and particularly hanging baskets, with spring and summer. But by carefully selecting the right plants, you can benefit from a beautiful floral exterior display all year round – adding a touch of colour at what can be a dull, grey time of year.

Winter hanging baskets for your business

Hanging baskets can make a stunning addition to your premises, adding colour and brightness to a property as well as looking inviting. However, while hanging baskets can require a fair bit of maintenance over the summer months as they need high-frequency watering and regular pruning, their upkeep can be that bit harder during the winter.

Of course, the lack of hot, dry days during the winter means you can be sparser with watering, but the weather means you need to be prepared for different challenges; from winds, heavy rain and storms to snow and frost. Therefore, before putting your hanging baskets in place, make sure you know how to look after them first.

Winter hanging baskets; what to look for

Firstly, it’s all about location. Pick a spot where your winter hanging baskets will get maximum daylight and catch whatever sunshine we are lucky enough to get. But make sure it’s not too exposed to the elements, taking advantage of any shelter you may have. Turn the hanging baskets occasionally so all plants are regularly exposed to daylight.

If the weather does take a turn for the worse, you may need to take some preventative action; bringing them indoors if there’s a storm coming or covering them with a fleece layer if there’s a heavy frost due.

When it comes to choosing your plants, do so with winter in mind. There are many hardy flowers and plants which will thrive in the colder months. Seasonal flowering plants such as crocus, primroses, heather, cyclamen, rave violets and pansies can add a burst of colour alongside luscious evergreens and attractive hanging trails of ivy or nasturtium flowers. You can even include some bulbs which will come to life when spring arrives.

As mentioned, hanging baskets will need watering less often in the winter than during the summer when they can need watering as much as twice a day. How frequently they need watering can be trial and error depending on the weather, size of the basket and the location. Aim to water them once a week but you may need to do so every other day. Check the soil regularly to ensure it doesn’t dry out or becomes waterlogged. You’re looking for the soil to be moist but not soggy.

As there is less soil in hanging baskets, they require more watering than garden flowers. And they may even need watering if it’s rained as they may have been sheltered from the rainfall and not have an adequate supply. An automatic watering system can be a big help.

When your flowers finish blooming or, despite your best care, any of your plants die, you’ll want to add new plants. Simply take down the basket, remove dead plants either making way for other plants to grow into its place or plant new ones.

Don’t forget to regularly de-head faded flowers and damaged stems. This will keep your display looking fresh but also keep it healthier as the plant’s energy will be diverted into producing more flowers. And you’ll also need to trim any scraggly plants to keep your basket looking its best.
